New Poll: Plurality of Americans Believe Businesses are Hiring

44% say businesses in their area are hiring workers, as opposed to 21% who say businesses are laying-off employees

Washington, D.C. (August 29, 2019)—The American economy continues to be fundamentally strong when considering the persistently low unemployment rates, rising wages, strong consumer spending and solid job creation. According to new Job Creators Network Foundation/ScottRasmussen.com Weekly Pulse polling, the number of Americans who believe businesses in their area are hiring workers is more than double the number who say employees are experiencing lay-offs.

More specifically, 44 percent say companies in their area are more likely to be hiring workers and 21 percent say they are more likely to be laying-off existing workers.

“More job openings currently exist in this country than available people to fill them,” said Elaine Parker, President of the Job Creators Network Foundation. “So it’s not surprising to see that Americans are confident about employment trends in their local communities. However, it does highlight the importance of workforce development initiatives, which aim to equip workers with the skills necessary to take advantage of more lucrative employment opportunities and better prepare for the future.”

“As reported by the media, economic indicators continue to send mixed signals,” commented pollster Scott Rasmussen. “However, with that said, half of Americans still rate the economy as good or excellent and a majority say their personal finances are in solid shape.”

Economic polling questions are below:

How would you rate the U.S. economy today? Excellent (16%), Good (34%), Fair (31%), Poor (14%), Not sure (6%)
