“President Biden is trying to claim consumers contending with historic inflation are strong, ignoring how rapidly rising prices — not strong consumer demand — is driving consumer spending higher. For instance, August retail sales released today were essentially flat when adjusted for inflation, indicating consumers are merely treading water, not racing ahead as Biden claims. Including July’s downward revision, retail sales are actually falling. Biden shouldn’t be allowed to get away with claiming that consumers paying higher prices due to inflation is a sign of strength. For a better metric of consumer health, look at the consumer sentiment survey, which is at its lowest point in history as consumers face runaway prices and declining real incomes due to Biden’s reckless spending.”
