ObamaCare Forcing Workforce Changes
(DALLAS, TX) – Bernie Marcus, the founder of Job Creators Network, today came to the defense of a national retail clothing company under fire for announcing the bulk of its workforce will be limited to part-time hours. According to Marcus, the new health care law is to blame.
“Because of ObamaCare’s unfair employer mandates and penalties, job creators across the country are forced to make some very difficult decisions,” said Marcus, who is also co-founder and former CEO of The Home Depot. “The straight up math of this law often means cutting employee hours to part-time levels is the only way a company can stay in business.”
Started by CEO Do Won Chang, an immigrant from South Korea, Forever 21 is a privately held clothing company with 30,000 employees. The firm last week told many of its line workers that their hours will be cut to 29.5 per week – 30 minutes less than what is considered ‘full-time’ under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a trigger for huge employer fines and costs.
“The Forever 21 announcement is further indication that this law is creating a part-time workforce society in America,” Marcus said. Twice as many new part time jobs were created in July than full time positions, according to the Department of Labor. And out of the 953,000 jobs created in the US so far this year, 77 percent were part-time.
Interestingly, Forever 21 has gone out of its way to deny the new health care law drove the decision to cut employee hours. The company may have learned from other enterprises: when small business owners with Denny’s and Five Guys Burger and Fries spoke up about ACA, they endured organized attacks via telephone and Internet. Leaders of national companies like Papa John’s, Universal Orlando Resorts and Regal Entertainment have also experienced curiously powerful and focused torrents of complaint discussing the law.
“It’s shameful that a successful company should be targeted for abuse for simply making difficult decisions to stay open and continue growing,” Marcus said. “This is precisely why Job Creators Alliance exists. We stand with Forever 21, just like we stood with other companies relentlessly attacked for simply piloting their businesses into the headwind of ObamaCare.”
